Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is a powerful method for avoiding global warming. However, securing a storage site is an important issue to realize CCS. This research proposes a new concept of CCS using a hydrate system in collaboration with industry and academia. CO2 stored under the seafloor is expected to demonstrate its self-sealing capability by forming CO2 hydrate between the reservoir and the seafloor surface, thereby realizing CCS without the need for a seal layer. To verify this concept, we are conducting laboratory experiments to observe CO2 hydrate formation behavior in sediments and to evaluate the self-sealing capability.
